Top Fantasy Books That Need to be Made Into Movies

I saw this article today: 8 Best Fantasy Books That Need To Be Made Into Movies (msn.com) and thought I'd share it with my favorite nerdy audience. There are a few on that list I have read and agree with.

The Last Unicorn could be a really good movie with today's CGI. A super creepy cartoon version was made back in the 1980's that was a failed attempt--still gives me the heeby jeebies to this day--much like the animated Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films made during the same unfortunate era.

I also highly agree with the lists recommendation for the Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb as well. Any of the 12 books set in that world would be box office magic. As would several that didn't make the list.

That said, here are my additions to the linked list above:

  1. The Lightbringer Series by Brent Weeks. This is a 5 book saga that BEGS to be brought to the big screen. I can't say enough about the characters, the magic, the world building, the storylines, and plot in general. Throughout several rereads I've tried to imagine the actors who could do the characters justice. If done right, of course, the result would be incredible.
  2. Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson. While technical a young adult series, the themes and storylines would be relatable and attractive to audiences of all ages. I mean, it worked for Harry Potter, Hunger Games, and a plethora of other novels geared toward YA audiences. I'm going to cheat a bit and throw Sanderson's Mistborn Trilogy in to this one as well. Again, epic world-building and magic system, political intrigue and so much more. In fact, pretty much anything penned by Sanderson should be made into a movie.
  3. Finally, the Razorland Series by Ann Aguirre. Seriously, one of the most satisfying conclusions to a dystopian trilogy ever written. If you aren't familiar, check it out. One caveat, if you prefer listening to audiobooks, please don't listen to this one. The narrator completely destroyed the stories by creating a much too young and innocent sounding main character. Totally ruined it.

Okay, that's all for this list. I'll keep you posted if I come up with more (which will inevitably happen).

Got suggestions? Let me know!
